Today we are celebrating Earth Day, an international event to save and support our environment. This year’s theme for international earth day is, ”Restore Our Earth”. This year we are celebrating 51st Earth Day. The first Earth day was celebrated on 22 May, 1970. Google has also released doodle to celebrate Earth Day. Every year many events are held across different countries to celebrate the day.
This year’s theme for Earth Day is ”Restore Our Earth”. Earth Day is also trending on Twitter and people are showing their support toward Earth Day. UN General Secretary while addressing said, ”Mother Earth is clearly urging a call to action. Let’s remind more than ever on this International Mother Earth Day that we need a shift to a more sustainable economy that works for both people and the planet”.
“Recovery from the Covid-19 Pandemic is a chance to set the world on a cleaner, greener, more sustainable path,” he added.
History of Earth Day!
The first earth day was celebrated on 22 May 1970 and mainly in USA. More than, 20 million came on streets to celebrate first Earth Day. Later in 1990, it became a international event. The reason behind introduction of Earth day was, the leakage of oil well in Santa Barbara, California. Later, on first anniversary of oil leakage, the movement of Earth Day became huge, resulting into celebration of Earth Day in USA and later on international level.
On Earth Day, 2016, Paris Agreement came into force after consensus by more than 190+ countries and signed by 120+ countries. The main mission of Paris Agreement was to reduce Global greenhouse emissions.
Theme of Earth Day 2021
This year’s theme for Earth day is, ” Restore Our Earth” and focuses on using renewables resources and greener technologies. According to earthday.org, “In this way, the theme rejects the notion that mitigation or adaptation are the only ways to address climate change. It is up to each and every one of us to Restore Our Earth not just because we care about the natural world, but because we live on it. We all need a healthy Earth to support our jobs, livelihoods, health & survival, and happiness. A healthy planet is not an option — it is a necessity.”
