Central Vista project work going on amid second wave!

Amid lockdown in Delhi and second wave of Corona Virus, work of Central Vista project is going on. Even the construction work of project come under ”Essential Services” category, amid lockdown in Delhi. The on going work on project draw criticism from Opposition and general public when many news agencies reported about it.

Amid brutal second wave, shortage of oxygen & medical supplies, shortage of beds in hospital, the priorities of Modi government can be clearly seen. It is true that, Supreme Court has allowed the project but what about the safety of workers. They have to work even after the on going second wave. According to some news agencies, workers are not even getting paid properly.

The Central Vista Project

The Central Vista project is an ambitious project of Modi government, which aims at redeveloping the buildings from India Gate to Rashtrapati Bhavan in stretch of 3 KM. It also include, building a new Parliament with capacity of 900 to 122 MPs. This project is assigned to Shapoorji Pallonji and Company Private Limited. The completion date for this is going to be November 30,2021.

Covid-19 second wave and the project!

Covid-19’s second wave is going on in the country and country is reporting more than 3 lakh cases per day. One of the most affected region is Delhi, where there is acute shortage of Oxygen, Hospital Beds and essential medicines. But, there is no effect on the Central Vista. The work is going on amid the second wave.

Actually, in Delhi, only workers living on-site can continue the construction work, but exception is made for Central Vista. Amid the lockdown in Delhi, this project got permission from DC of Police, New Delhi to carry workers to site for work. Delhi Police issued 180 passes for carrying workers and movement passes are under ”Essential Services” category.

Workers are coming from Karol Bagh, Sarai Kale Khan, Nizamuddin areas, which questions about the safety of workers during the pandemic. They can get infected from the virus and can spread virus among each other.

According to report, workers are working 12 hour per day at daily wage of 600. Many workers even told that, they didn’t get their monthly wages. They want to go back to their homes but can’t go due to their unpaid wages.

Criticism from the Opposition

When opposition knew about the ongoing project amid the second wave, they attacked the Government. Many leaders including Rahul Gandhi, Mahua Moitra, Srinivas B V criticised the government. Even public encircled Modi government on this.. Here are some tweets by Leaders and public :-

Conclusion

Definitely, the ongoing project should not go on during such times. Even though, it is cleared by Supreme Court, but currently in this second wave it is just endangering the lives of workers. Also, it is like, kind of of luxury work, which can be done later. On the other hand, the workers who are not paid, should be clear with their dues.

The Government should divert the money and prioritize toward improving healthcare system rather than Central Vista Project.
